Girl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia Announces Appointment of New CEO, Megan O’Neill
Richmond, VA — Following an extensive national search led by executive search firm Fahrenheit Advisors, the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia (GSCV) is proud to announce the appointment of Megan O’Neill as Chief Executive Officer. O’Neill was the top choice among a highly qualified pool of candidates and begins her tenure immediately.
With over 30 years of leadership experience in the nonprofit sector, including 27 years with the YMCA of Greater Richmond, Megan O’Neill brings a proven record of operational excellence, strategic leadership, and community engagement to GSCV. Most recently serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the YMCA, O’Neill led complex, multi-site operations while delivering mission-aligned impact and fostering long-term sustainability.
“Megan’s exceptional qualifications, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment to equity and youth development make her the ideal choice to lead GSCV into its next chapter,” said Dr. Paula Young, Chair of the GSCV Board of Directors. “Her unanimous recommendation by the search committee reflects our deep confidence in her ability to champion our mission, strengthen our organization, and expand our impact.”
O’Neill is widely recognized for her expertise in team development, governance, and volunteer leadership. She has managed 15 boards and spearheaded major philanthropic initiatives, including securing the largest individual gift in YMCA association history—a transformative $1 million contribution—and raising $700,000 in just two months to support facility expansion and engagement efforts.
Her background in youth development, camp operations, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives align closely with the values and programs of Girl Scouts. Her passion for empowering young people and fostering inclusive, mission-driven spaces mirrors GSCV’s longstanding commitment to developing tomorrow’s leaders.
“Megan lights up when talking about her love of camps, and her passion for the mission of Girl Scouts is evident in every conversation,” said Dr. Young “We are confident that her leadership will strengthen our council, support our volunteers and staff, and inspire the next generation of Girl Scouts across the Commonwealth.”
O’Neill steps into the role at a pivotal time as GSCV advances strategic initiatives focused on program innovation, volunteer engagement, and growth across the region. Her thoughtful leadership and deep roots in the Richmond community make her uniquely suited to lead the council into a bold and exciting future.
