Girl Scout Commonwealth Council Camps
Dear Campers and Parents
Girl Scout Commonwealth Council is getting ready for a great summer at Girl Scout Camp Kittamaqund and Pamunkey Ridge Girl Scout Camp. Outdoor program has traditionally been a cornerstone of Girl Scouting, in that it offers unique opportunities for girls to grow, gain independence, develop an appreciation of nature, make new friends and learn new skills. Our focus for the summer of 2008 will be on maximizing the utilization of our camp properties, with a goal of serving a combined minimum of 2,000 girls and adults.
GSCC will offer a variety of camping opportunities at Camp Kitty, including two weeks of awesome resident camp for Junior - Senior Girl Scouts, three summer adventure weekends for troops, and four weekends of traditional troop camping. Variety will also be offered at Pamunkey Ridge, including six weeks of resident camp for Brownie – Senior Girl Scouts, one summer adventure weekend for troops, and three weekends of traditional troop camping.
The GSCC summer camp staff will be “mobile,” providing two weeks of resident camp at Camp Kitty and six weeks of resident and day camp at Pamunkey Ridge. Camp staff are chosen for their character, understanding of girls, love for the out-of-doors and special skills/certifications. Their backgrounds are screened through the Virginia State Police and they undergo pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. All staff members are thoroughly trained in program skills, first aid, CPR and emergency procedures prior to the beginning of camp.
A highlight of summer 2008 will be the return of resident camping to Camp Kitty. Over the two-week period, Junior, Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts will participate in 17 exciting camp sessions (5 designed for Juniors and 12 designed for Cadette/Seniors), offering a large variety of program focus areas. Six programs are new for 2008 and were developed based on girl input. Six of the 12 Cadette/Senior programs include travel outside camp!
Pamunkey Ridge will offer 62 fun-filled day and resident camp sessions, 14 of which are new for 2008 and were developed based on girl input. Included in this wide variety of program offerings are two day camp sessions, seven equestrian opportunities, 14 programs designed for Brownie Girl Scouts, 23 programs designed for Junior Girl Scouts, and 16 programs for Cadette/Senior Girl Scouts.
This booklet contains all the information you need on the day and resident camp opportunities offered to individual girls this summer. Troops and service units can get more information on the troop camping and summer adventure weekends from the February FOCUS on the Girl, the council’s website, and from the camp registrars.
We invite you to join us this summer to experience the fun, laughter, adventure and beauty that awaits you at camp. Camp is a unique environment where girls can blossom into strong, confident and resourceful young women and create memories that will last a lifetime.
See you at camp!
Barbara Hyman, Director of Program Services
