Girl Scout Mission
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and
character, who make the world a better place.
More Than 90 Years
Founder Juliette Gordon Low organized the first Girl
Scout Troop on March 12, 1912, in Savannah,
Georgia.
An American Institution
Girl Scouts of the USA was chartered by the U.S.
Congress on March 16, 1950.
Still Growing Strong
Today, there are 3.7 million Girl Scouts—2.7
million girl members and 928,000 adult members working
primarily as volunteers.
Girl Scout Commonwealth Council of Virginia, Inc, (GSCC) is one of 4 councils for the state of Virginia, and serves "more than 16,000 girls and 5,700 adults in 30 counties and the cities of Emporia, Richmond, Hopewell, Colonial Heights, Fredericksburg, and Petersburg."
The strength of the Girl Scout Movement
rests with the dedicated and committed service of
volunteers. More than 90% of program services occur
within troops/groups in 75 service units (communities)
in 30 counties and 6 cities. Troop leaders, supported
by a corps of administrative volunteers, the council’s
55 member staff and the community support the delivery
of the Girl Scout program.
