Girl Scout Commonwealth Council of Virginia, Inc, (GSCC) serves more than 18,405 girls and 5,286 adults in 30 counties within the cities of Emporia, Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Petersburg, Richmond, and Fredericksburg. GSCC is one of eight councils which serves the state of Virginia.
Girl Scout experience five different age levels in Girl Scouting which allow girls to progress in skills and activities together. Placement options give girls the chance to experience Girl Scouting in a variety of ways – including but not limited to, church, school, housing communities, and individually.
Girls in Girl Scouts also have the opportunity to make new friends, go camping, do science experiments, help others, learn about careers, travel, mentor younger girls, canoe, hang out with other Girl Scouts, etc. You can dream, plan and carry out almost any adventure.
The affairs of the council are managed by a 31 member Board of Directors. Board members are elected by the corporate membership and are accountable to the membership for governance of the council and stewardship of the council's critical resources, to the National Board of Directors of GSUSA for compliance with charter requirements, and to the state of Virginia. The board of directors is accountable to the federal government in matters affecting nonprofit corporations. Based on policy decisions made by the board of directors, Lillie C. Branch, CEO, establishes council wide operational procedures and provides guidelines and ways of work that are used by volunteers and staff in carrying out their responsibilities of delivering the Girl Scout program to girls. The council has a 55 member staff.
Girl Scout Program
Girl Scouting is a nonformal, experiential, and cooperative education program that promotes girls' personal growth and leadership development. Partnering with caring adults, girls design fun and challenging activities that empower them and raise their voices with a local, national and global sisterhood.The council owns and operates two camps; Pamunkey Ridge Girl Scout Camp and Camp Kittamaqund. Girls look forward to Girl Scout camp because it’s fun. Girls play, make friends, hike up mountains, rig and sail boats, toast marshmallows, and whisper at night after lights out.At camp, girls learn skills they will use throughout their lives: taking turns, the responsibility of doing a share of the chores, keeping up with one’s own belongings, making new friends. Girls gain confidence as they learn new skills. They take part in decision-making for group activities.Camp staff model behavior such as respect for others, integrity, and sound decision making and they foster this behavior in campers. Staff members bring fun and adventure to all camp activities. Fun Adventure. Belonging. The power of girls together. Building skills for the future in a secure outdoor setting, surrounded by adults who care about girls’ successes. The goal of Girl Scout Commonwealth Council is for each camper to grow in appreciation and knowledge of herself, the Girl Scout program, the natural environment and other people.
